Here in the tech community, we love a good rivalry. From Facebook vs. Myspace to Mac vs. PC, there's nothing that divides and unites like a good rivalry. A new one has emerged in recent years that has stirred the passions of geeks most everywhere, and that is iOS vs. Android. Hearing debates on this topic bring to mind the heated debates of Mac vs. PC, and people on both sides are just as passionate. This is the first of a two-part series on why one is better than the other, with iOS going first.
1. The availability of apps
You can argue that the quality of Android apps are better and the the App Store is riddled with fart apps, but when it comes down to it the sheer size of the App Store leaves the Android Market looking like a convenience store in comparison to a supermarket. Sure there are a lot of fart apps in there, but there are quite a few quality apps, and the good thing about it is that there are multiple choices for apps, so if you want a good to-do app, you got your choice of quite a few. And let's be honest here, apps are the reason you bought these phones in the first place.
2. A more consistent experience
Say what you will about Apple's regulation of apps, but what it leads to is a consistent experience with their apps. When you download an iOS app, you don't worry about it being plagued with malware, because Apple has reviewed it for you already. And if one does happen to slip through, Apple has the power to pull it immediately, ensuring the problem doesn't get worse.
Another area of consistency is in the hardware. Because the same company makes the hardware and the software is optimized for that hardware, you know that it'll run and run well on that device, unlike Android, which has a one size fits all approach, letting any Tom Dick or Harry run the OS on their devices.
3. Easier syncing
Many people don't like that the iPhone is locked down to iTunes, but in practice it turns out to be one of it's greatest benefits. To sync your iOS device, you plug it into your computer. Bam, that's it. iTunes pops up and your stuff magically gets transferred to your device. That's one reason the iPhone and iPod touch have caught on with a lot of non-geeks, it just works.
4. Better media management
Although there are different options for managing your media on Android, iOS' offering trumps these in is beauty and ease of use. Apple has created by far the best way to play back and view your media, and adding new media is as simple as opening the iTunes app and tapping a few buttons. Easy.
5. It's more intuitive
With all smartphones there's a bit of a learning curve, but with iOS, Apple's made theirs the smallest. Pinch-to-zoom feels like the way that we were born to zoom in, copy and paste makes more sense than any other implementation I've seen on other smartphones, and I personally love iOS' new multi-tasking system. Everything just makes sense, and feels like it's how everything should work.
