Blackberry developing iPad competitor?

Rumor has it that Blackberry will be launching a tablet in November called the "Blackpad." It's said to have a 9.7" screen Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and will allow tethering with your Blackberry phone. The tablet will also supposedly have cameras in the front and the back something the iPad currently lacks. Blackberry is probably hoping to release the tablet before the iPad is updated, as it will most likely be adding cameras as well. Pricing is rumored to start at $499.

Update: Spotify not starting over in the US

Quickly responding to earlier reports that Spotify is restarting negations with US music labels, Spotify has told Telegraph that the earlier reports were "without any substance" and that they "have moved forward significantly and we're still on course for launch by the end of the year. Good news.

Apple adding "new and revolutionary" feature in next version of OS X

Well well, looks like Apple hasn't completely abandoned the older OS X for the younger, prettier iOS. In a job post on Apple's website, it says they are looking for a software engineer to work on a "new and revolutionary feature for Mac OS X." The whole job post is full of Apple's usual hyperbole, saying it's something that has "never been done before;"the only thing missing from the description is the word "magical." Maybe the magic is added later on in the development process.

The requirements for the position are a degree in Computer Science, knowledge of Objective-C, and experience with the HTTP protocol is a plus. Does this mean the next version of OS X will be more cloud-based? More importantly, which member of the cat family will it be named after? My vote's for the ocelot.

Spotify starting over in the US?

Electronista reports that Spotify, the ad-supported free music service, may be starting over in it's talks with US music labels. Spotify and the labels have been in talks for a while now, and it's reported that the labels aren't keen to the idea of ad-supported music, although Spotify has agreements with all four major labels in Europe already. It's rumored that Spotify and the labels will forget talks so far and start from scratch again but a 2010 launch is still hoped for.

Best Buy and Clearwire team up to offer 4G moble broadband service

Best Buy's Connect service, which currently provides 3G mobile broadband service, has teamed up with Clearwire to offer 4G service. No word on pricing yet, but they say the service will be available next year. Sounds good, let's hope this will push Clearwire to offer 4G in more markets soon.

Wireless charging on it's way

Wireless charging, a technology that promises to exponentially cut down our dependence on cords, is one step closer to becoming a reality. A universal standard, named "Qi," will be published on August 30. The standard will allow up to 5 watts of charging power, which will be more than enough to charge your phone and various other gadgets and gizmos. The charging devices will have to be certified by a third-party, and after passing inspection they'll carry the "Qi" logo, so the devices and compatible devices should be easily identifiable. If you listen closely, you can hear the rejoicing of clumsy tripping people everywhere.

Best Buy giving away Side Shield for iPhone 4

There are a few (small) stipulations, but if you have an iPhone 4 or you're getting one from Best Buy, they'll give and install a Side Shield by Zagg for free. To get the goods, you have to be a Best Buy Rewards Zone member (which is free) or have already purchased or are going to be purchasing your phone from Best Buy. If you want full-bodied protection, Best Buy will also be taking 20% off of iPhone 4 cases through August 7, so if you don't want a Bumper case, you've got another option now.

Apple Safari extensions go live

Safari extensions went live today, catching up to rivals Firefox and Chrome. There isn't a huge selection yet, but what is there looks pretty good, and surely more is on the way. Check it out here.

iPhone vs. iPhone showdown

We're four generations into the iPhone era now, and sometimes it's easy to forget how far it's come since it's introduction in three years ago, seemingly light years ago. Vimeo user Mike Hellers has posted a video pitting all four generations of Apple's little moneymaker in a side-by-side speed test. The results may not be too surprising, but it does give us a reminder of what life was like in 2007, or as I like to call it, the olden days.

Panasonic introduces first consumer 3D camcorder

Think all the hype about 3D is worth it? Panasonic certainly hopes so, as they've unleashed the first consumer 3D camcorder into the wild. Up until now, the consumer 3D experience has all been consumption of content, now it seems companies are starting to push for the creation of 3D content.

Apple introduces brand new products

Along with some updates to their existing product line, Apple introduced a couple of brand new products. The more significant one is the new Magic Trackpad. Apple notebook customers have been enjoying multi-touch gestures for a few years now, and with the Magic Trackpad Apple brings this capability to desktop users as well. It's a glass trackpad exactly like the one found on Apple's Macbooks and Macbook Pros, but the Magic Trackpad has 80% more area. It's Bluetooth-enabled and will work from up to 33 feet away, and it runs on two AA batteries, which is perfect because Apple also introduced a new battery charger.
As you might have guessed, this is a very stylish battery adapter. Apple also claims that it is 10 times more effecient than the industry average for battery chargers. They're also throwing in six  AAs for good measure.
The charger retails for $29, the Magic Trackpad retails for $69, and both are available right away.

Apple updates iMacs, Mac Pros, and Cinema Display

Just as predicted, Apple quietly made some updates to their product line this morning. The updated iMacs lose the Core 2 Duo processors and replaces them with Intel's Core processors, ranging from an i3 to a Quad-Core i7 in the high-end 27" model. They also added discrete ATI graphics from top to bottom, plus the option for a 256GB SSD drive (which will set you back a cool $600). The new iMacs start on the low end at $1,199.

New Mac Pros, updated iMacs, and new Cinema Display?

Word on the internets today is that Apple might be launching some updated hardware tomorrow. First up are updated versions of the Mac Pro,  along with updated iMacs, which will most likely put Intel's Core processors in all iMacs. Then it's rumored that there will be a new 16:9 27-inch Cinema Display, and it's also been hinted that Apple may be launching a new multitouch trackpad device, but it doesn't seem as likely. We'll check the store tomorrow and let you know.

The tastiest way to manage your Firefox tabs: Tab Candy

Once upon a time, it was difficult to manage all your open browser windows. You'd have to hunt down what you needed to find, then jump through hoops to get back to where you were. Then tabs came along. They kept everything in one place so you could find things easily. But for a lot of people, tabs have gotten out of hand as well. Whether it's doing research, keeping tabs open for music, or comparing prices, we're getting to the point where we need a way to organize all our tabs. Enter Tab Candy. Similar to Exposé in Mac OS X, Tab Candy will show you thumbnails of all your tabs at a glance. But it doesn't stop there. You can also create and name groups of tabs, and when you open the group it will only open the tabs from that group. Judging by the video, it looks pretty nifty, and seems really intuitive. Check out a video demonstration after the break, and you can also hit up the source link to download a Tab Candy Alpha.

Windows phone 7 vs. iPhone browser speed test

Windows Phone 7 is in the works, and based on what we've seen so far, it's taking a slightly different approach to the smartphone OS than the other major players have been taking. One area where they've done this is in their browser. Most modern smartphone browsers are WebKit based, but Microsoft has chosen to use a version of Internet Explorer for their phones. Hearing that will make some people happy, but also annoy a lot of people, but we haven't really seen it in action yet against any competition. Well Redmond Pie just posted a video pitting the Windows Phone 7 browser against Safari on an iPhone 3GS running iOS 4. Judging by the video, the Windows Phone 7 browser renders pretty good, but is a little on the slow side.

It should be noted that the Windows Phone 7 browser is running on pre release hardware, and the phones are on different 3G networks, however, they are both on 3G, and on the first couple of pages tested the Windows Phone 7 looked painfully slow. But hey, Microsoft does have some time before launch to pep things up a bit. And if they want their new OS to compete, they're gonna need to.

White iPhone 4 delayed again

Oh how time flies. It seems like only a week ago that Steve was promising that the white iPhone 4 would be available by the end of July. Oops. In a press release by Apple this morning, they stated that the white iPhone has been "more challenging to manufacture" than they had expected, so the release date has been pushed back to later this year. And to think, this all could have been fixed with a simple phone call to Sherwin-Williams.

Apple begins iPhone 4 case program

It's case time! Apple's case program went live on their website today. Here's how it works. If you bought an iPhone 4 but not a case yet, Apple has created an app to download on your iPhone that you'll use to pick out which case you want. If you bought your phone before today, you'll have until August 22 to apply, if you buy your phone today or after today, you'll need to apply within 30 days.

If you bought a bumper case, there are a few different ways you might get your refund, depending on where you bought it and how you paid for it. If you bought it from Apple with a credit card, good news, Apple will automatically refund it to your card, and you can enter your receipt number or credit card number to check the status of it. If you paid at an Apple store with cash, check, or gift card, bring your receipt to a store sometime before September 30 to get your refund. If you paid with a gift card online at Apple, they'll automatically mail you a new gift card for the refund amount. And lastly, if you bought the phone from an AT&T store, you'll have to fill out and mail in a rebate coupon by September 30.

How to: Make free inbound and outbound calls with Fring for iPhone.

Recently I relocated to an area that doesn't have any AT&T service at all. This was a pretty big deal, as I was job hunting and expecting calls from potential employers, so I had to be reachable by phone, and I couldn't afford a landline, but I did have Wi-Fi that was always available at my house. So I found a solution that uses a combination of the free Fring app, Google Voice, and a free VOIP service called Sipgate. Here's how to get the same setup.

New Microsoft logos?

Engadget is reporting that Microsoft may be introducing new logos for it's core products, namely Windows, Windows Phone, Xbox, Bing, and Office. Microsoft has kept the same basic look for most of these products for years, so a little updating probably couldn't hurt. Check out the pictures and a video on Engadget's site.

Skype for iPhone updated for multitasking

Skype just updated their iPhone app to allow for background calling. Apple demonstrated this during it's keynote for iOS 4, but we're just getting the update today. It'll work pretty much like the iPhone's built in app, it'll pop up a notification when you get a call, when the phone's locked and you get a call you can unlock to go straight to the call, and you can also use other apps while on a call. One thing that was not added was video calling, which will most likely come further down the road. At least there's another good option for making calls on the iPhone now.

No phone maker is safe from Apple's wrath

If you're a smartphone maker, you should probably prepare to have your phone on Apple's website pretty soon. Apple has seemed pretty perturbed about this whole "anntenagate" thing, and if they're going down, it looks like their gonna take everybody else with them. Nokia is the latest brand to have one of it's phones disgraced on Apple's website, specifically their N97 mini smartphone. The N97 joins phones by Blackberry, HTC, and Samsung that have been filmed suffering the same antenna issues that the iPhone 4 has suffered. At this rate, Apple won't stop until they've got every phone maker on their website. Look out Huawei.

Blackberry details multimedia experience of Blackberry 6

BlackBerry has just posted some screenshots of what the multimedia experience will be like in their new operating system. Most of it looks like standard fare for a modern smartphone operating system, there will be a CoverFlow-like interface to browse music, better photo organization, and better camera controls.
The photo organization certainly looks to have improved, instead of dealing with files and folders, pictures can be group by events or dates, with what looks like an easier way to preview photos.
What's new is the built-in podcast app, that will let you search and subscribe to podcasts straight from the phone. All in all it looks pretty familiar; it's easy to see the Android an iPhone design inspiration in there, but it certainly is an improvement from what BlackBerry has to offer now.

Adobe working on FaceTime alternative called FlashTime

Get this, Adobe is working on chat platform similar to Apple's FaceTime that's called "FlashTime." Mark Doherty, a Flash Platform Evangelist, shows the service running on two Nexus Ones. And, surprise, it pretty much looks like it'll work exactly like FaceTime, but will be based on Adobe AIR. Looks as though Adobe's not really going for originality points with this one. Video of the service in action after the break.

Microsoft announces new Xbox 360 and Kinect pricing

Microsoft finally officially announced the pricing of it's Kinect sensor and also a replacement for the Xbox 360 Arcade. As many outlets have already stated, Kinect by itself will cost $149.99 and will come with the game "Kinect Adventures." As for the new Xbox, it will have the same form factor as the new Xbox 360, but will have 4GB built in storage, a matte finish, and built in Wi-Fi. The new Xbox by itself will keep the Xbox 360 Arcade pricing at  $199.99, and will be shipping Aug. 3. Microsoft also announced a new Kinect bundle, which includes the 4GB 360, plus the Kinect sensor and "Kinect Adventures" for $299. Microsoft also stated that 15 games would be available at launch on Nov. 4  for Kinect, and that they would be priced at $49.99 instead of the $59 price Walmart currently has.

Some users reporting problems with Droid X Screen

Word has been going around on the internets that some people are having problems with the screens on their Droid X freaking out randomly. There's no official word on anything from Verizon yet, although some people with the problem have already gotten their phones replaced. Check out video of the issue after the break.

MOG subscription music service releases iPhone and Android apps

MOG today released apps for both the iPhone and Android phones. If you haven't heard of MOG, it's a subscription-based music service with two different subscription plans, one for $4.99 a month that gives you access to their library and radio services, and a $9.99 plan, that adds offline access to your music and mobile access. Having played with it for a bit today, it's a pretty nifty service. MOG's current library has over 8 million tracks, not quite iTunes' 13 million, but in testing I found all but a few of the artists I was searching for. The mobile apps are pretty nice allowing streaming of your library and also downloading directly to your device. The downside at least on the iPhone version is that it doesn't take advantage of iOS' multitasking, so it doesn't allow for background audio or downloads. As we speak I am keeping the app open so I can download the 200 or so songs I've picked out so far.

All in all, the service is pretty nice, though I prefer Spotify's free and subsidized with ads model over the pay per month model, but this may be good enough to hold me over until Spotify launches in the States. MOG has a free 3 day trial, and there's no credit card required, so head over to iTunes and check it out.

Apple pushes out iBooks update

Today Apple updated their iBooks application to version 1.1, which added audio and video support and better PDF handling, among other features. The best part about it is you can read the book and watch the movie all in the same app now! That should make reading a little more bearable.

Zagg offers solution to iPhone 4 reception problems

If you have an iPhone 4, you might have heard about those reception issues everyone's been talking about lately. The problem happens when you touch the little black strip on the lower left side of the phone, the signal diminishes. Apple says this can be alleviated using a case, and Consumer Reports recommended another option, using duct tape to cover the strip. If you're someone who doesn't want to disfigure your new phone, but you also want to make calls on it, Zagg offers up the invisibleSHIELD.  The invisibleSHIELD is a transparent strip that covers the side of the phone, and will help ease those reception issues. There are a variety of different coverage options available, one that covers just the side of the phone for $9.99, or you can get a covering for the whole phone for $24.99.  Here's a video Zagg posted that demonstrates how it helps reception.

1 vs 100 on Xbox Live shutting down

Via a press release, Microsoft announced that 1 vs 100, a game show playable over Xbox Live, will not be returning for a third season. Having played the game when it was on, I can say it was a unique experience, one that none of the other consoles have at the moment. Microsoft did give hope that we'll see something similar in the future, they said the 1 vs 100 team is applying the technology used for 1 vs 100 to new projects that will be unveiled in the future. Here's hoping they create something similar that takes advantage of their new toy, Kinect.

Inside Apple's antenna test lab

After yesterday's big press conference, Apple has updated their website with a section that gives details about it's antenna design and testing labs. According to the page, Apple has invested over $100 million in building these things, and after looking at the page, I definitely believe them. In these labs they can test all kinds of things, like GPS, Wi-Fi-, Bluetooth, and also cellular signals. The best part for Apple is that when they're done using the testing labs, they can sell them to the X-Men for top dollar.

Stitcher iPhone app updated to support background audio

Stitcher, the multi-platform app that plays podcasts, radio shows and other on-demand audio, has been updated to version 4.0, which finally adds the background audio capability the was introduced in iOS 4. Now when you open the app, you're free to check e-mail, surf the web, and basically come and go back and forth between the app, all without skipping a beat while your podcast is playing. You also play, pause, and skip to the next item from the iPhone's built in audio controls as well, which is handy if your phone is locked.  Head over to iTunes and check it out.

White iPhone 4 available by end of July

Amongst all the hoopla during Apple's press conference today, Jobs said that Apple will begin shipping the white iPhone 4 by the end of July. Want more good news? Word is you can get a free case for it.

What Apple said

So what did Apple say at this big press conference they held today? Pretty much what everybody thought they would. First, they talked about how great sales of the iPhone 4 have been. Then, they demonstrated how signal attenuation happens on a few other phones when you grip it just right, namely the Blackberry Bold 9700, the Droid Eris, the Samsung Omnia II, and they also threw in an iPhone 3GS for good measure.Their point was that signal attenuation happens on most every smart phone, and the iPhone 4 is no different.

Then they got down to what they're going to do about it. First of all, they released the iOS 4.0.1 software update, which is supposed to more accurately display signal strength. In addition, they will be giving a free case to every iPhone 4 purchaser up until September 30th, and if you've already purchased a bumper case, you'll be able to get a refund. Since there's a shortage of bumper cases right now, Apple will be giving customers a few different options for cases. You'll be able to apply on Apple's website starting late next week. And if you're still not happy, there's always AT&T and Apple's 30 day return policy.

What do you think? Is this enough to satisfy customers who have complained? Should Apple have done more? Sound off in the comments.

Update: Apple's put up a video of the press conference on their website. Check it out here.

Don't forget! Apple press conference at 1 ET

Yes that's right, Apple's holding a special press conference today to talk about the iPhone 4, presumably the antenna problems that have been reported. Stay tuned.

Facebook to launch mobile distribution platform

According to iSuppli, Facebook will make an app distribution platform, kind of like a Facebook app store, available for mobile. This means that developers can make all the games and applications you  use on Facebook available on your phone as well. This is pretty big news, since Facebook has over 550,000 applications already, and over 1m developers. Will developers flock to this new mobile platform, and give Apple's App Store a run for it's money? If Facebook can find a way to get developers more money than Apple can, it'd definitely a possibility.

Apple releases iOS 4.0.1 for iPhone

Apple today made iOS version 4.0.1 for the iPhone available for public download. The update issues a fix that's supposed to more accurately calculate how much signal there is, and also adds larger signal bars. Head on over to iTunes to download now, and watch your signal magically decrease.

Rumor: Apple press conference on Friday

Rumor is that Apple will hold a special press conference this Friday at 1 PM Eastern time. No word on what it's about, but we're pretty sure they might talk about that iPhone 4 antenna thing you might have heard something about. Haven't heard about that yet? Don't worry, it's a little inside.

Apple makes iOS 4.1 beta 1 available to developers

Boy Genius Report just broke the news that Apple has made the beta available to developers. What kind of goodies are in store? Maybe a fix for a minor issue some people have had with the iPhone 4? Nah, it's probably just a bunch of stuff about unicorns.

Google Maps adds "Send-To-Car" compatibility with Ford SYNC

If you drive a Ford with SYNC, it's Christmas in July. Today Google added the "Send-To-Car" ability for cars with SYNC. It works like this; you go to Google Maps in your web browser, then find the address you want to go to, then you can send it to your car straight from the site. When you start driving, the address will be in the built-in car navigation that will guide you to the address. Pretty slick. Now if they'll just add the ability to send directions to my 10-year-old Civic, I'll be really impressed.

5 features the next iPhone should have

It's been almost a month since the iPhone 4 was released to much fanfare, and even more sales. With each new iPhone, Apple keeps whittling down the list of missing features users have been complaining about since the original model, but there's always room for improvement; these are a few features Apple could add to make their next iPhone better.

Windows Phone 7 getting cloud-based backup similar to MobileMe

Hot on the heels of Blackberry announcing a cloud-based backup solution, Microsoft announced with Windows Phone 7 they will have a similar service that will back up contacts, calendars, OneNote files, and photos, which will all be available to view at the Windows Phone Live companion site, much like the now deceased Kin. In addition, users will have 25GB of SkyDrive storage space, and access to a new Find My Phone service, that will find, lock, or remote wipe the phone, just like what Apple currently offers with MobileMe. The best part of the announcement is that everything is completely free with the purchase of a Windows 7 phone. Let the Apple making MobileMe free rumors commence.

Uh-Oh: Consumer Reports cannot recommend iPhone 4

Well this isn't good. Consumer Reports has tested the iPhone 4  in a lab that simulates real reception conditions, and found that holding your hand over the gap on the lower left side of the phone can drop signal by as much as 20 decibels, which can be enough to drop call. Consumer Reports states that this is a design issue, not a software issue, and they won't recommend iPhone 4 until it is fixed. They did suggest a temporary fix to use for now, but it kinda puts a damper on the phone's flashiness.

Now anyone can create an Android app

Google announced this morning that they have released a beta version of a tool called App Inventor. With this tool anyone, even non-developers can create apps for the Android OS visually, with no coding knowledge required. It looks pretty powerful, in App Inventor you'll have access to the phone's dialer, GPS, and it will also connect with services like Twitter. So go ahead and head to App Inventor here, and get busy working on those fart apps.

Update: Skype blocks Fring

Apparently there was a little more than network "stress" that Skype was causing Fring. In a press release by Fring this morning, they stated that they are ending support of Skype services following the threat of legal action by Skype. You'll still be able to make Fring-to-Fring video calls, but Skype chatting and video calls are now out of the question. On a positive note, does this mean that Skype is working to enable video calls in their mobile apps? No news from them yet, but let's hope so.

[Fring press release]

Update: Techcrunch has spoken to a Skype spokesperson that says they have been in discussions with Fring for a while over whether Fring operates in accordance with Skype's licenses, and that the decision to remove Skype access from Fring was entirely Fring's decision. Fring says this simply isn't true. Oh boy.

iPhone 4 vs. point-and-shoot camera

I wanted to do some testing to see how the iPhone 4 camera stacks up against an average point-and shoot. I took a few outside and inside shots to see how well it performed. The point-and-shoot is a 7.2MP Panasonic camera that I got my wife a few years ago. Here's how the iPhone stacked up.

Fring suspending Skype calling for now

Fring just announced they are temporarily suspending the ability to make Skype video calls because of network stress. In the meantime you can still make Fring to Fring calls, the other services that don't allow video calling. Hopefully Fring will beef up their capacity and bring Skype back soon.

Droid X HDMI-out test

Over at IntoMobile they tested the (mini) HDMI-out capabilities of the Droid X. It's a pretty cool feature that we'll probably be seeing more of in high-end smartphones soon. Judging by this video it looks pretty good on a big screen, and  the control interface that comes up on the phone when you're playing a video or looking at pictures is pretty nice.

New iPod touch to be FaceTime capable?

According to UK retailer John Lewis the next version of Apple's iPod touch will feature the same 5MP camera and flash from the iPhone 4, HD video recording, and also the ability to make FaceTime calls. This is based on what the retailer has heard from suppliers. Certainly makes sense, as Apple was rumored to have added a camera to the touch at last year's iPod event, but reportedly pulled it at the last minute. Perhaps Apple was waiting until the iPhone camera improved and they announced FaceTime. Also factor in that Jobs said they would be shipping tens of millions of FaceTime capable devices this year, and it all adds up to the upgraded iPods at this years iPod event, usually held in September.

Fring adds video calling; It's kind of wonky

Mobile app Fring today released an update to their app that adds the capability to make video calls over 3G. This is the first iPhone app that takes advantage of Apple's Facetime technology, and will make cross-platform video calls possible.

So how well does it work? So far for me it's been kind of wonky. Logging into my Fring account has taken forever, and I keep getting a wrong password/e-mail message when my login info is right. After getting logged on I made a video call to my wife's laptop over Skype, and I could see the feed from the laptop, but on the other end there wasn't any video. Hopefully this is just because there's a flood of traffic trying the app right now, and as it becomes less congested service will imrpove.

Do you guys have the updated app yet? How has it been working for you so far?

This iPhone is hot!

An iPhone 4 owner sent this picture over to Boy Genius Report stating that his phone caught fire and burnt his hand. In other news, Apple recently began selling fireproof bumper cases.

Cheaper cable=fewer channels

Reuters is reporting that cable companies are in talks with entertainment companies to create cable bundles with fewer channels and lower prices. Sounds good to me, as I really only watch around 10 channels out my hundred or so.

YouTube Leanback beta launched

YouTube has launched a public beta of Leanback, a new YouTube experience tailored to home theater PCs. The service will automatically play your feeds and recommendations in full screen, and HD if it's available. You also will have the option to play different genres of videos. You can't use a mouse, everything is controlled by the keyboard. In my testing, everything was snappy and quick, video quality was good, and the controls were easy and intuitive.

Here's a video from YouTube explaining the service in more detail.

Here's the link to try it out.
